Bt technology enables crops to kill harmful insects without spraying pesticides, reducing water contamination. This paper provides the first causal estimates on downstream health benefits of Bt adoption in China. Leveraging variation that combines staggered rollouts of Bt cotton, differential exposure, and fine-scale hydrological linkages, we show that upstream Bt adoption substantially reduces downstream mortality. This effect leads to nearly 85,000 deaths averted annually in rural China. Further analyses suggest additional health benefits beyond reducing mortality, and these health effects are not driven by enhancing agricultural productivity, raising income, inducing migration, or changing lifestyle behaviors.

演讲人简介：

Wei Luo is an Assistant Professor at the School of Economics, Jinan University. She received her Ph.D. from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. Her research interests include development economics and labor economics. Her current research focuses on how institutions and technologies affect individual well-being. Her work has been published in leading journals such as the Journal of Development Economics (two papers), Journal of Human Resources, Journal of Population Economics, and Journal of Economic Behavior & Organization. She is the principal investigator of a National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) Young Scientists Grant (Category C). Her research has received the First Prize for Excellent Paper Awards from the Labor Science Education Branch of the China Association for Labor Studies in both 2023 and 2024.
