Public goods are often provided by teams of volunteers, however, the optimal team size in a specific environment remains an open question. We show that the optimal team size depends on the degree of complementarity of the public good production function. Within the class of the Constant Elasticity of Substitution (CES) production function, we prove that when the complementarity is low (high), there is a lower (upper) bound for the optimal team size. We test these theoretical predictions in the laboratory. We find that the average contribution in the first period is higher in the ten-person (four-person) team when complementarity is low (high), as predicted by theory. The gap increases over time as subjects learn, approaching the theoretical maximum contributions, but not the minimum.

演讲人简介：

Yingzhi Liang is an Assistant Professor at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. She received her Ph.D. from the University of Michigan. Her research interests lie at the intersection of behavioral economics and market design. She uses a combination of economic theory, lab, and field experiments to solve social problems in marketplaces.
