Abstract
Learning chemistry perennially grapples with a core challenge: bridging the gap between the macroscopic, observable world and the abstract, invisible particulate-level
phenomena that govern it. Students often struggle to visualize the dynamic, three-dimensional nature of molecules, reaction mechanisms, and the complex lab environment.
Here, we present our 10-year work in making chemistry visible by creating a synergistic system that leverages both Human and Machine Intelligence. The Human Intelligence component is foundational, originating with our use of the IPOV (Instructor’s Point of View) technique. This human-centric approach is amplified by a vibrant learning community on Discord, which fosters peer-to-peer support, collaborative problem-solving, and co-creation of knowledge. The Machine Intelligence component scales and personalizes this visible learning. This is exemplified by "Hydragen". Hydragen uses machine-learning algorithms to analyze student interpretations of spectral data, deliver personalized feedback, creating an intelligent tutoring system.
