1. Programme Overview

With over a century of academic excellence, the Civil Engineering discipline at Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU) has produced 38 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Engineering and numerous industry leaders. The program integrates Green and Smart Construction, Marine Infrastructure, Structural Materials, Urban and Engineering Resilience, forming a comprehensive, multidisciplinary system. Recognized as a “Double First-Class” discipline by the Ministry of Education, it has been consistently ranked among the Top 50 worldwide in the QS Rankings for more than a decade, reaching No.16 globally (No.3 in China) in 2025. The discipline hosts the Shanghai Key Laboratory for Digital Operation and Maintenance of Public Buildings and Infrastructure, driving innovation in intelligent sensing, digital twins, and smart maintenance technologies.

2. What You’ll Study

Aligned with China’s national strategies for intelligent and green transformation in construction, the program integrates Artificial Intelligence, Smart Construction & Operation, and Carbon Neutral Technologies. Through a “Theory–Practice Dual Helix” training model, students will engage in specialized courses such as Intelligent Construction Robotics, Digital Twins, Smart Design and Operation, and Sustainable Construction. Collaborations with leading industry partners provide hands-on experience, preparing students to become visionary leaders capable of tackling complex global engineering challenges.

Students will master cutting-edge skills including AI-based design optimization, zero-carbon material development, and intelligent disaster sensing. 4. Faculty Excellence

The Civil Engineering Department hosts 63 faculty and researchers, over 80% of faculty members have international experience. The program also invites senior engineers from top enterprises such as China State Construction, Shanghai Construction Group, and Shanghai Urban Investment to co-teach practice-oriented courses.

5. Laboratories & Facilities

The Department provides state-of-the-art laboratory facilities covering Soil Mechanics, Structural Engineering, Materials, Rock Mechanics, Geophysics, and Vibration Testing, with a total area exceeding 3,000 m² and over 400 sets of advanced instruments. Several industry-based training centers have been established in collaboration with major construction companies such as China State Construction and Shanghai Construction Group.

SJTU Civil Engineering maintains close partnerships with over 10 world-class universities, including the National University of Singapore, fostering active exchange programs, joint research, and co-taught courses. International scholars regularly visit for lectures and collaborations, enhancing the department’s global academic presence.

Our graduates enjoy nearly 100% employment rate, with more than half pursuing postgraduate studies.
